Earlier last week I was on the phone with Kim discussing what we should do for dinner. She wanted to cook, but I was in the mood for some chicken fried rice at the local Thai restaurant, Lemongrass. I’m not necessarily a fan of Thai food, what with the curry and the spices and the runny noses, but they DO make an excellent fried rice. And their peanut sauce? The closest thing I can get to what I had in Indonesia. (Ahhh… Mickey’s Restaurant… You will forever be in my heart and on the tip of my tongue…)
So Kim and I are debating what to get at the Thai restaurant, when Kyler walks up to me. He hands me his mini Etch-A-Sketch and says “I wrote a word, Daddy. What is it?”
I glance down, and this is what I saw:

That’s right. Kyler, Who’s barely 5 years old and scrawls his name in spasmatic chicken scratch (just like his Daddy…) wrote the word “TIE.” On an Etch-A-Sketch!!!
“That’s… the word ‘tie,’” I said in astonishment.
“Like the Thai restaurant!” he exclaims.
“Yes… Like the Thai restaurant…” I repeated, staring at him in amazement.
And I remain amazed to this day. How he did this I have no idea. What his brain is capable of is… Shocking. But before my heart gets too swollen over this Brainiac moment, I should also point out that just last night Kyler was discussing math problems with his friend, Wil.
“Two plus two is two!” he exclaims excitedly.
Uh-huh. Yeah. You just keep thinkin’ that, buddy boy. An’ you’ll be an English major yet…
Just like your Daddy.
